Planned features for alpha
Yesterday, I've finished feature list for first alpha version.These are core features, that we will try to test and fix:
- Editor with basic functionality (in-progress)
- Syntax-highlighting (todo)
- Scopes and scope-selectors (todo)
- Parser (ready)
- Snippets (ready)
- Basic file operations (ready)
- Unicode support, including UTF-8 without BOM (ready)

I don't know if it is too early to bring up details like this, but here it goes. One of Text mates biggeset strenghths for is how it handles columns. It is easy to select a colum (hit option key). It is incredibly easy to move the whole column. Cut, copy, paste, delete all well done. The coolest, is typing the same content into all rows of the columns, that feels like an extension of my brain. The only possible feature missing would be the ability to fill a column with autoincrementing number. (BTW I do a lot of VHDL, that is why columns are important to me.) something like
wire(0) <= other(7)
wire(1) <= other(6)
wire(2) <= other(5)
wire(3) <= other(4)
wire(4) <= other(3)
wire(5) <= other(2)
wire(6) <= other(1)
wire(7) <= other(0)
see what I mean by incrementing. It would be nice to have options like, starting number, increment (positive or negative, or larger than one) padding with zeros (ie 001, 002, 003, ... 012, 013). And different numbering systems (Hexadecimal, Octal, ASCII (a, b, c) Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, iv).
I know I am day dreaming, but it seems to me that at least the basic ability to select and manipulate a column might be something you might want to consider early in the development of Sonya.

jose: Yes, column work is on my list, but not for first alpha. In Intype there is scripting support (commands) which allows you to manipulate contents of selection (both stream and column). And there will be more than this. One thing you maybe (don't) want to know about me is that I'm obsessed with usability and effectivity. :) So any good idea on how to improve developers' effectivity, and/or increase usability is welcome.
And don't bother with alphas, or planning. Having a big list of ideas helps me in creating future concepts. At Intype's new homepage, I will be updating general table of ideas with priorities and planned versions. So thank you jose. ;)
Current priority is to make testing alpha, with minimum required features and to start testing it as soon as possible.

I can't wait to try the alpha. Will it be downloadable by the general public or will it just be released to a closed testing group? If so, how does one earn a spot in it? :)
Try to avoid an abundance of settings - remember that every user setting available is a small failure for the interface designer. I don't know if that applies everywhere, but... In other words, make it smart and smooth. I haven't used TM so I don't know if it suffers from this, but I doubt it...
Something I want a setting for though, is autoindentation; I'm using jEdit on Windows right now and it guesses the indentation by looking at lines near the current one. I would just like it to continue with the same indentation as before when pressing return. Some people probably want it the jEdit-way.
I saw in the latest screenshot, I think it was the latest anyway, that the editing area doesn't have a border, that doesn't look so good, put a one-pixel grayish border on it or something. No?
I won't be using Intype for more than a few months until I can get a Mac, but it seems like it will do some serious magic with that time.

Also, the file drawer, when you get to it, it would be cool if it could look like TextMate's drawer in the sense that it extends from behind the editor itself, if that's possible. Just make it look good.
And be wary of ugly icons. I could maybe help with that. Actually I'd love to help with almost anything, but especially UI stuff. Seeing as you're obsessed with usability, maybe we would get along. On the other hand, who isn't? And maybe you're done with all the UI already.

Branstrom: Thank you for your ideas. I'm an UI designer and specially for Intype I'm creating new icons set (128x128 optimized vector icons which automatically (by scripting in Macromedia Fireworks) shape (and empasize main details) to sizes 64x64, 32x32 and 16x16).
Now, UI is not so important, important is to make software itself having as much of control as designer wants. This is for example one of main reasons why I'm writing a new editing component (big cursor in column editing mode, highlighting tabstops in snippets, help bubbles, autocomplete boxes, and so on...).

Hmm. Scripting, huh? Like, defining corners and stretching the rest? Just curious, haven't heard of such scripting... But I'll just google it so you can get back to Intype development instead ;) Sounds like you've got the UI stuff under control then but let us know if there's anything we eager bystanders can do to help.

this seems like a very couragous venture, i can't even imagine how your going to port all those jucy cocoa-only features in textmate to the windows platform.
Anyway just one quick question, what toolkit are you going to be using? XPFE, QT, GT?

matt: TextMate's main power is not in Cocoa. Parser is custom, snippets are custom, commands are custom, scopes are custom, themes are custom, grammars are custom. And these are not platform-specific.

snippets are loaded using NSBundle, Grammers are parsed via NSPropertyList, syntax highlighting is done via NSParagraph Style (I'm not to sure about this one, although it seems like the best choice) scopes are handled, quite easily, through NSTextView, or in Allan's case NSTextInput (simply because he wrote a custom view that conforms to NSTextInput)
you may be write that the implimentations are **custom**, but the power behind those features come from cocoa. No doubt they could be done on any platform, but it would be alot more difficult.

Martin: I've visited many times to this blog and cannot wait for the alpha of in Type to come out!
Over the last few months I gradually become favorite of Scintilla and tried several scintilla-based text editors. I must say that so far the best is still SciTE developed by the author of scintilla itself. So, would you please highlight the major improvements of in Type over SciTE?
Also, I found an interesting feature of this blog: it can fold visitor's comments. This reminds me to ask the following question: which programming languages and/or structured texts are able to be folded in in Type? Will LaTeX files be folded in in Type?
I desperately hope that in Type will be open source, or to be made dynamically linked to the scintilla library, so that users can extend the functionality by replacing the Scilexer dll.

We are not using Scintilla component any more. Scintilla was part of the first prototype, but I decided to replace it with my own component (codename SonyaEditor), which we are currently developing. I'm using SciTE as my primary editor now, so I want to implement all major features and plenty of new ones.
Many improvements were mentioned in this blog. Full feature list will be available at official Intype's website. I'll leave a note when we launch it.
Intype will not be OpenSource. But still can be extended by scripting support or by plugins. We are considering to make SonyaEditor OpenSource, but not the whole Intype project.
AD Folding: just check TextMate out, if TM can do it, Intype will be able to do it as well :) You can easily add your own language grammar with folding rules, or edit existing ones. Grammars are kept in XML files available for anyone to modify.

I been using these little beautty thing for a couple of weeks and i love it!
I been using Notepad++ for like a year and my eyes will not take it any longer. The white is bunrning my eyes.
The only bad point is the lack of tabs, only reason why im still using notepad++. But i love Intype, its clean, its cute and easy to change color themes.
